Summer reading is heating up and this week the teachers are ahead. The teachers are doing a better job of reading each day this summer. Can the students catch them? It shouldn’t be too hard. But the library needs readers to sign up to keep track of the days that they read at least twenty minutes. And readers get prizes like free books.
Four new ‘feel good’ picture books include Made for Me by Zack Bush and is a tribute to a father’s love for his new child. Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal is a sweet story about the names a young girl has and how they fit her. I’m a Duck by Eve Bunting is a sweet yet silly story about a duck who is afraid to get in the water and swim. Bruce the bear is back with a new book called Bruce’s Big Move and recounts the journey to a new house that is big enough for his whole family of four geese and three mice. Ryan Higgins continues the story of the bear who ended up being a mom to geese with great pictures and plenty of humor.
Teens will be pleased to know that book three in two popular series is now available at the library. Libba Bray’s Diviner books continue with Before the Devil Breaks You is the third of four books. The current title set in an altered New York City in 1927 has bright lights, wild parties where jazz is king but the dead are coming. Kevin Sylvester’s final volume, Minrs3 is out.
Identity seems to be a dominant theme in many of the new books available today. Lisa Genova, author of the bestselling Still Alice, has a new book titled Every Note Played which explores regret, forgiveness and what it means to be alive. Being alive is also a theme of How to Be Safe by Tom McAllister which is about a teacher initially suspected of shooting up a school after being suspended. While she is quickly exonerated, she is now part of the public eye and can do nothing privately. Can she find a new place to fit in and a new identity? And finally, Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison is about an average young adult who realizes he has to be the one to shake things up if his life is ever going to change. But how?
The Friends of the Library will hold a book sale on Tuesday, July 3rd from 4 – 6pm. All sales by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programming. Find a book or two for sitting at the lake, reading at the cabin or enjoying on vacation wherever that might take you.
Storytime continues each Thursday morning at 10:30 with adventures around the world through books, crafts and activities for children in grades 2 and below. Join the fun and discover the world.
