@ Your Library

This afternoon, The Skally Line will perform at the International Falls Public Library at 4pm. This history and song concert appropriate for ages 10 and up is sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and made possible by a grant from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The Friends of the Library book sale will be Wednesday, October 7th from 4 – 6 pm. All sales are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programming. There are lots of books available as the library finishes weeding the non-fiction section of the library to make room for new books.

The school year is a month old and hopefully everyone is settling into good routines and habits to make this year successful. If not, it isn't too late to make a renewed effort to spend a few minutes every day reading. And if you are crushing the reading every day thing, then don't forget the library. The library can help provide plenty of books, magazines, audiobooks and more to keep you reading and listening every day for the rest of your life. That is one of our main goals, to keep the community reading.

Are you curious about this world and how we got here? Simon Winchester, author of title such as The Professor and the Madman and The Map That Changed the World also wrote Land: How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World. It is a fascinating look at many aspects of today's world. He regularly grapples with these big topics and brings them definition and perspective. Or how about his newest The Breath of Gods: the history and future of the wind? Why and how is wind speed supposed to continue increasing in the years ahead and so much more is examined with his exacting detail.

Are you curious about money? Planet Money: a guide to the economic forces that shape your life by Alex Mayyasi and the hosts of NPR's Planet Money released a great book to dip into. This is one of those books that you don't have to read from the beginning. You can just find a chapter that seems interesting and read it. I recently heard a book podcast refer to these kind of books as coffee table books, because if you leave them out then whoever sees the book feels inclined to dip in and find something to share. The books encourage learning and conversation.

We also have books to help all of us at some point in life. The Healing Power of Resilience by Tara Narula provides a new prescription for health and well-being. The author is a cardiologist who noticed that in patient care mental health needed to be addressed alongside physical health and that resilience is the key to both. And then Dr. Lucy Hone recently published How Will I Ever Get Through This? It provides 'evidence-based tools to help you heal from hardship, grief and loss.

There are so many options for being curious and learning through other's curiosity.
