So many good books to read this summer. Upper elementary students may want to borrow The Sweet Spot by Elaine Vickers. Trip desperately wants to win the local Little League Championship this summer. He thinks it will be the perfect summer but then his dad unexpectedly deploys overseas and Sam (short for Samantha) joins the little league team and suddenly his perfect summer is uncomfortable both at home and on the field the two places he has always belonged.

Renowned author Gary D. Schmidt has a new book written with Ron Koertge called Styx and Stones that is sure to bring about many laughs. Simon died but refuses to drink from the river of forgetfulness and has spent centuries trying to escape the underworld. He finally succeeds and finds himself not in Greece, but in St. Paul, Minnesota in a middle school bathroom, naked. Another book by renowned authors is Found Sound by Meg Wolitzer and Charlie Panek. Felix and Marigold are on a sound scavenger hunt after Felix finds a mysterious box with OPEN ME on the cover. Inside is an audio player, headphones and a list of timecodes. Can you figure out what Felix and Marigold are trying to figure out in this summer adventure?

Head to the moon in Life on the Moon by Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr. Leo gets an amazing opportunity to join the first moon colony. Then his dad disappears and authorities think his dad has deserted. Leo ‘borrows’ a rover and heads out to search for his dad, only to learn that the two rules for life on the moon (‘There is no life on the Moon’ and ‘Don’t ask questions.’) are not true. The Moon has abundant life and Leo has nothing but questions.

Discover an amazing story from the past in Red River Rose by Carole Lindstrom. Taking place during the Northwest Resistance of 1885 set among the Metis people who are expected to give up their land yet again and Rose is determined to preserve their land and way of life.

Margi Preuss spoke to the 4 – 6th grade classes last month at Falls Elementary. If you haven’t read her books, I highly recommend Windswept, The Littlest Voyageur or her northwoods mysteries Enchantment Lake, The Clue in the Trees or The Silver Box. Her historical fiction set in ancient Japan Heart of a Samurai and Shadow on the Mountain set in World War II Norway are also both really good.

Adults looking for new mysteries should take a look at Maggi Nicole, the author of the National Park Mystery series and while there isn’t a mystery set in Voyageurs yet.. A Murder in Zion and Lost in Yellowstone are both worth reading and enjoying the scenery. And if you like reading books set in beautiful locations then try The Parisian Chapter by Janet Skeslien Charles. This book set in Paris in 1995 features an aspiring author from Montana who moves to Paris to become an artist.
