@ Your Library
Saturday, October 11 is a busy day at the library. Join us at 10:30 am for stories, rhymes and more about fall followed by play time with our early learning toy collection including our toddler sensory bin. Then join us at 1pm for the first of our Flight Path grant programs. Build a bird feeder to take home and watch birds all winter. We’ll also have a bird scavenger hunt in the junior room and a scavenger hunt you can take home and do outside. Borrow a book or movie about birds or be one of the first to borrow a birding kit with a bird identification book and binoculars for an adult and a child to discover birding together.
Wednesday, October 15th at 6pm come hear the group Caleigh present “They Brought Their Songs: International Folk Music of Minnesota.” They Brought Their Songs weaves together stories and history of Minnesota with musical genres that highlight the diverse ethnic make-up of the state. Caleigh pairs harp, fiddle, bodhran, banjo, accordion, guitars, mandolin, congas, viola, contra bass, and captivating vocals for a program that is a perfect harmony of Minnesota history. This delightful musical experience connects listeners with musical selections including Scandinavian, German, Italian, Finnish, Native American, French-Canadian, Irish and more. This program appropriate for ages 10 and up is sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACHF).
The next book challenge as we rapidly move through the year is to read an adventure book. What is an adventure will vary from person to person, but here are a few that we thought would be good. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkein, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie, The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty, The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas or My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.
There are also picture books with adventures like Numenia and the Hurricane by Fiona Halliday, Wonder Walkers by Micha Archer, Play Outside by Laurent Moreau, Jumanji by Chris VanAllsburg or Louise, the adventures of a Chicken by Kate DiCamillo (who has several adventure tales, see also The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane). Finally, here is a wordless adventure story to share The Journey by Aaron Becker.
Whatever your age, whatever else you do, spend time each and every day reading. Reading is good for everyone and the library is here to encourage you, and to help you find wonderful books to read.
Check out our new art exhibit of art by St. Thomas students. It will be on display until the end of November. Do you have art you have created? We’d love to have you share it with the community by displaying at the library for a couple of months. Talk to us about scheduling an exhibit for you.
