Library Column for July 11, 2025

@ Your Library

It is the middle of July, the middle of summer reading and the library hopes your reading has been marvelous. We hope you have found wonderful books to read. Books that encouraged you, helped you learn something, made you laugh or maybe cry and that you are looking forward to reading today.

Next week the Silent Book Club will meet on Monday evening, July 14th from 6:30 – 8pm. Come enjoy a treat and beverage while sharing what you’re reading and then get time to just read. Wednesday at 11 am is Libratory, Thursday morning at 10:30 is storytime and Friday morning from 10:30 – noon is Big Play. Come spend time with us learning, growing and having fun. We are often outside enjoying summer if the weather permits.

This is also the last week before writing entries in our summer writing contest are due. Please submit all entries by 6pm on Friday, July 18th. Entries can be submitted online to ifallslibrary@gmail.com or in person to the main circulation desk. Any form of writing is acceptable with a limit of 1,000 words. Let us know if you have any questions.

Summer is a great time to explore new worlds. Explore a new park, a new lake, take a hike and see if you can find a new plant, bug or see a different bird or other animal. But you can also use summer to explore new worlds in books. Read a different genre, learn how to do something new or listen to audiobooks instead of reading a physical book. Try our Playaways, audiobooks that only need headphones to hear someone read you a story.

Marie Benedict wrote and Nicola Barber reads The Mystery of Mrs. Christie a novelization of the real-life 11-day disappearance of Agatha Christie. We have most of William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor titles in Playaway and many of C. J. Box’s Joe Pickett mysteries. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett as read by Meryl Streep is available on Playaway and would make a great listen. Non-fiction is also available including James Patterson: The stories of my life by James Patterson includes delightful details from this world famous author’s life. Bill O’Reilly has written quite the series of books and several are available on Playaway including Killing the Mob: the fight against organized crime. The book was written with assistance by Martin Dugard and read by Robert Petkoff.

Summer can also be a good time to read magazines. They fit into smaller spaces and generally the reading commitment is less. You can often read a single article in under 10 – 15 minutes making them perfect reading before bedtime. We have subscriptions to Canada’s History and Macleans as well as National Geographic, Minnesota Monthly, Sports Illustrated and the delightful Woods Reader with stories, poems, photos and paintings to connect us to the woods. If you prefer, the Libby app also provides access to magazines ranging from cooking to knitting to sport to current events and more.

    Hello Diane-

I am having trouble logging into consumer reports on the online falls library site- I called about it but talked with a man -he had no info –
I use the correct password- but it says “my subscription has expired “- I called about my library card and it does t expire until August ( renewed online & thru this man at the library who helped me on the phone)
He said it was probably and issue with the falls system. But had no other help.
Please get the consumer reports online back up!
    Thanks

I am working with the company that we purchase our annual subscription through. The password expires every July and they have quit sending me notice to update the password, so unfortunately I end up relying on patrons not being able to get in to get a new password. An email has been sent to the company with our request for the new password to be entered. The new password will be falls2025!

You are welcome to try and see if that will work, but it usually takes them a day or so to update the password. Sorry it isn’t working at the moment. We do have access in the building, if you need something immediately.
