@ Your Library
The weather is warming, spring sports have started and it is time to think about spring reading. What do you want to read this season? Are you looking for quick, light-hearted reads or does the warming weather make you want to tackle something substantial and meaty? I’ve had years with both scenarios. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to read, while I read what I need to, to talk to students next month about summer reading. So, I am currently focused on reading titles for juveniles that I think would make good summer reading options.
A couple of weeks ago, Minnesota lost one its premier photographers, Jim Brandenburg. The library primarily has his children’s books. We only have Looking for the Summer in the adult collection. If you’d like to see some of his photography, take a look at our display of our books of his. And then get to know the work of local photographers, we have some amazing photographers right here in Koochiching County.
If you have a kid who is trying to understand spring sports like baseball, then stop by and borrow one of our books like The Ultimate Guide to Baseball by James Buckley, Jr for facts, stats, stars and stuff or maybe the very basic Let’s Play Baseball by Shane McFee or A Girl’s Guide to Softball by Janelle Valido Woodyard. If they want to learn more about those who have played the game then take a look at our collection including Teammates by Peter Golenbock, Be the Best You Can Be by Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek by Jerry Carpenter or World Series Champions: Minnesota Twins by Sara Gilbert.
High school track athletes might want to borrow Be a Better Runner by Sally Edwards, Carl Foster and Roy M. Wallack. The golf team might borrow Private Lessons providing ‘the best of the best instruction’ by David Dusek. The softball team might find new ways to build their skills in Softball Skills and Drills by Judi Garman.
Are you new to coaching? Want some tips and tricks for guiding the players through the game then consider You Can Teach Hitting by Dusty Baker, Jeff Mercer and Marv Bittinger or The Little League Guide to Conditioning and Training by Mark Gola for ‘preparing young players with fundamentals and basics.’ We also have a series of “Learn from the Pros!” videos that includes Offensive Drills, Defensive Drills, Hitting Mechanics and Baseball Fundamentals. The movies can all be borrowed for a week while the books can be borrowed for 4 weeks.
Families looking to add pickleball to their fun together might want to borrow Pickleball for All by Rachel Simon and then borrow our set of paddles and balls to see if they want to play more regularly. Another option for families (or individuals) is our set of discs to play the disc golf course out at the college. Make a point of getting outside as the weather warms and the sun shines higher in the sky!
