@ Your Library
The month is clipping along at a brisk pace. Two weeks until the Home for the Holidays parade. Which means Thanksgiving is in less than two weeks. It is time to look at the past year and begin making our thankful lists. I try and be aware of my blessings every day, but a bigger picture look at the year and the wonderful things that have occurred is always nice.
Of course for me, a large part of my thankfulness is for books. I love books, new ones, old ones, and even strange ones. That means I have begun to put together my best of list for the year and I am always very thankful that I can read, that writers continue to write such amazing stories and that libraries exist so I don’t have to buy all the books I want to read.
Reading helps me be thankful as I read about other periods of time, other locations, other situations and it all makes me grateful for where and when I am and what I have. It also allows me to experience adventure and explore the world and beyond from the comfort of my living room sitting under a blanket and maybe a cat.
One of the things I am thankful for this year is the influx of used Garfield the cat comic books we were able to obtain. Most of the books have gone out of print, but we still have a number of kids who really like reading them. We had mended, taped and glued our Garfield books over and over and many were looking very shabby and done. So to be able to add almost thirty new to us Garfield the cat comic books has made me very thankful for the area libraries that share what their readers are no longing using.
The next time you visit the library, check out our “Books I am Thankful for…” board and add your own title to the board. We’ll keep it up until the early part of December when we begin to transition the library to holiday decorations. Check out what other’s are thankful for and find new authors to explore.
Here are some books I am still looking forward to reading this year. The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny is the 19th Inspector Gamache title and the series has been building for a number of books to a climax. Our copy is circulating and I’m not so patiently waiting my turn. I am looking forward to reading Sentence by Catherine Newman a novella about folks caring for both children and parents. And I also hope to get to The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich before the end of the year. I will also probably throw in a couple of children’s novels as it is much easier to find some uplifting, delightful reads. Maybe the latest Kate DiCamillo The Hotel Balzaar or The Fairy Tale Fan Club by Richard Ayoade or Trevor Noah’s Into the Uncut Grass.
