Library Column for June 2, 2023

@ Your Library

Summer reading starts Monday! We have a full week of programs planned. The summer teen and adult puzzle challenge will be available beginning Tuesday, June 6th. Stop in sometime this summer and see if you can solve all our puzzles for prizes. We also have new takeout crafts available for teens and adults. Create your own personalized glass and coaster.

We have received some packets for youth to improve their financial literacy. Learn about credit, saving, spending, budgeting and more this summer. Packets are free and available while supplies last.

The courtyard steps continue to be finished and we’ve gotten permission to place a time capsule under the stairs. So during the month of June, pick up a time capsule sheet to fill out and return to the library by Friday, June 30th. We’d love to have everyone – kids, adults, grandparents fill out a form for inclusion in the time capsule. The capsule will be placed under the stairs on Monday, July 3.

Tuesday, June 6th at 3:30 pm we are hosting a special storytime with Chione, featuring a brand new musical story based on Twin Cities author Ka Vang’s Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon. Vang’s short chapter book tells the story of Shoua, a Hmong-American girl who discovers her voice as she saves an injured dragon while camping in the northwoods of Minnesota. Hear this story set to beautiful and evocative music composed by fellow Minnesotan Jocelyn Hagen! Chione will also share the stories of each of their instruments and the ensemble they create – the wind quintet!  The program is 45 minutes and is for all ages. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACFH).

Wednesday mornings at 11am, beginning June 7th, the library will provide school age children with the opportunity to explore STEAM through Libratory. Join library staff for a different project each week.

Thursday mornings at 10:30am, beginning June 8th, is storytime. We’ll be outside as many weeks as the weather permits. Everyone ages 8 and under is welcome to join us for 30 – 40 minutes of stories, rhymes, songs and more as we explore the world of books and learning.

Friday mornings from 10:30 – noon is Big Play, beginning June 9th. Bring the family and spend time actively learning through play. Again, we hope to be outside most weeks and will set up a story stroll, some kind of chalk game and a variety of other learning toys.

Summer booklets provided to most are youth includes program details and reading logs to earn free books. A summer calendar with dates and times is available at the library. We are open all summer from 10am – 8pm Monday – Wednesday and 10am – 6pm Thursday and Friday. We are closed Saturday and Sunday. We’d love to have you include the library in your summer schedule. Visit us before or after getting lunch at Backus, we’re just a couple of blocks away
