While we are slowly seeing more daylight and we have had some sunny days, the winter doldrums, cabin fever and/or hibernation are all taking their toll this winter. It is time to shake things up and be grateful that it is February and we are about halfway through official winter. So swing into the library, pick up a new book (or something you’ve been meaning to read for a while) and settle in to read for an hour or two. Grab a magazine and read about the latest photography equipment, gun options, fishing holes or news story. Just give yourself time away from home to help those winter feelings go away.
Here are some books with gorgeous covers that make me want to dive in and not come out until we have transitioned to the next season. Elizabeth Adler’s The Hotel Riviera is set in Cote d’Azur as a young American is swept off her feet and soon finds herself the chef/owner of the Hotel Riviera, or is she. Her husband disappears and soon a variety of shady people arrive all claiming ownership of the Hotel. Enjoy great food and lush scenery in one of the most romantic places on earth.
I have always thought Ireland was romantic and while it isn’t necessarily warm, Andrew Greeley makes it seem warm and loving and full of character in his Nuala Anne McGrail books including Irish Love. I have heard castles are very drafty and not very warm but they always look so appealing and grand. So Keys to the Castle by Donna Ball will keep you warm and cozy while reading.
Maeve Binchy often writes of tropical islands and Mediterranean paradises. In Nights of Rain and Stars travel to a small Greek Island where a group of travelers from around the world and the local villagers are brought together in unexpected ways after a sudden tragedy. Julia Gregson takes readers to exotic locales through the adventures of female entertainers being used as spies in World War II in Jasmine Nights.
Isabel Allende’s books often have exotic looking covers and The Japanese Lover is no exception. Travel from Poland to San Francisco, endure world war, internment and a forbidden love that spans almost seventy years.
I’ll end today by dreaming of time at the beach with Elin Hilderbrand and Lisa Genova. Elin sets many of her books around water and the cover of Silver Girl drew me in as I went looking for books and takes place during a Nantucket summer. Love Anthony also takes place on Nantucket as a young woman deals with the death of her young son.
Storytime this week (Thursday, February 7th at 10:30 am) will focus on shadows. All young children are welcome to come with their caregiver and enjoy about thirty minutes of stories, rhymes and more followed by about thirty minutes of free play with the library’s collection of early learning toys allowing caregivers to talk with other caregivers or play with the children in their care.
