Director’s Report – May circulation wasn’t quite as terrible as April, but still lower than the previous year. Including digital circulation we are currently 16% below year-to-date. Summer programming has started, we had 18 at the first Libratory, 33 at storytime and I’ll have Big Play numbers when we meet next week.

I met with the city administrator and attorney on May 18th and we all agreed that we will be calling the police anytime the patron we are struggling with causes disturbances. The first day we called the police they had a conversation with him in which he was warned that they would be arresting him and charging him with a disturbance every time. He then stayed away until 5/31 when we had to call the police again. They again warned him and didn’t charge him. I have been working with the city attorney on a revised patron conduct policy after talking with the Duluth librarian as I knew they had trespassed a number of people who caused disturbances. I’ll have that at the meeting for your approval.

I hope to have new computers ordered by the time we meet. We are replacing our circulation and cataloging computers this year. The Friends of the Library approved a number of items for the Library of Things and those have been ordered and received and most are cataloged and available for checkout. I still need to catalog the slide projector and laser tag game. The croquet set, blood pressure monitor, OBDII  tool (car diagnostic device), hot cheese, chocolate or caramel dispenser and trail camera are ready to go. We are also looking at adding an outdoor movie screen to the collection.  Publicity for these items will begin shortly.

Old Business: Summer programming has begun. Libratory on Wednesdays at 11, Storytime Thursdays at 10:30, Big Play on Fridays from 10:30 – noon. Crafters’ Cafe on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 11 – 1. Jolly Pops will perform on Tuesday, June 16th at 3:30 pm, poet Ryan Vine on Thursday, June 18th at 4 pm and Sarah’s Serpentarium will share reptiles with the community on Tuesday, June 23rd at 3:30 pm. July will include a Teen ice cream science program on July 7th at 1pm, historian Hayden Nelson will talk about pine logging in northern Minnesota and the Virginia and Rainy Lake rail company on July 14th at 1pm and water bugs of Minnesota with Nature Connect on Tuesday, July 28 at 3:30 pm. Final draft of the 2026-27 Annual Action plan was presented and approved.

Our issue with a patron has been resolved for now. He was in and courteously asked for the restroom key and asked for help printing. Under new business we are looking at approval of a new patron conduct policy based on feedback from the city attorney and based on a policy by the Duluth Public Library.

New Business: The library received a $1,000 donation from PCA. Frank moved to accept the donation with an understanding that a thank you card would be sent with signatures from the board and Horning seconded, all approved.

A revised Patron Code of Conduct was presented for approval. Frank moved to accept the new policy and Johnson seconded. All approved.

Frank requested that the director evaluation be moved to June. The director mentioned that she will be gone for the August board meeting so will have the city and county budget proposals at the July meeting and will work with city hall as to whether or not the August meeting needs to happen.

Friends of the Library book sale is Tuesday, July 7th from 3pm –5pm.

What are you reading? Katie is reading The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke, Heather is reading Whose Body? by Dorothy Sayers while Will is maximizing his time outdoors and share his three goals for the summer. Mona just picked up The Book of Luke by Lovell Holder, Maggie just started Buckeye by Patrick Ryan and finished Purgatory Ridge by William Kent Krueger while Cindy recommended A History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor and Squirrel by Nancy Castaldo. Diane is reading Red River Rose by Carole Lindstrom and Sasha emailed to say she was reading Legendborn by Tracy Deonn and the 6th grade SS textbook Northern Lights.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8th, 4:30 pm

Meeting adjourned at 5:20 pm.
