January is well and truly underway. I am loving my evenings to curl up under a blanket preferably with a cat on top and read. There are so many wonderful books to read. I have been enjoying some of our new junior room fiction, including the newest book by James Bird Wolf Club. I have loved learning about Ojibwe culture through The Brave and Wolf Club. Both books have kids learning and growing into their own culture. Families dealing with loss will find Finding Lost by Holly Goldberg Sloan a moving read that ends with hope. How do you move on after the loss of someone dear, how do you find a new path forward?
I also read the third Angeline Boulley book Sisters in the Wind. Ms. Boulley writes amazing, hard-hitting fiction for young adults and this was no exception. This ‘Good Morning America Book Club Pick’ features Lucy, a teen on the run for the last five years who really wants to believe that Mr. Jameson and his ‘friend-not-friend’ want the best for her, but she is being followed and the secrets she knows want to swallow her whole. Can she find a home?
Probably about time to find some cozy fiction. When the world seems to be heavy and full of so much suffering, sometimes you just need to shut the world out and escape into a sweet world created by an author. Julie Leong is an newer author that I’ve discovered and her books The Teller of Small Fortunes and The Keeper of Magical Things both take place in a world of wonder and delight. I’m thinking much of my cozy reading this year will be re-reads. I know how the story comes out and even if it deals with heavier subjects, I find the familiarity comforting. Maybe reread Madeline L’Engle probably my all time favorite author if I have to name just one. Margaret Mahy is another familiar author that maybe it is time to reread. What do you find comforting in reading? Do you re-read, find cozy books, let us know your strategy for reading in the coming year particularly if we can help.
I am looking forward to lots of reading time in 2026 and we hope you are too. The Elementary School is currently participating in a Winter Reading Challenge, so encourage those elementary students to read at home (and if you read to them, that counts too). We have 3 different winter reading coloring/activity books available in the library for a variety of ages. Pick one up if you relax by coloring or puzzling.
The library has skis and snowshoes that are available to borrow for a week at a time in a variety of sizes. If trail conditions aren’t good locally, we may halt loaning so they don’t get ruined. But if you are looking to go to another locale with good conditions, let us know. We also request reserving equipment a day ahead of time as they aren’t stored in the building, but in a shed.
