Library Column for September 12, 2025

@ Your Library

Fall activities are in full swing. Join us Monday, September 15th at 6:30 pm for an amazing presentation by Candace Gossen, who has been an interpretive guide for Voyageurs this summer. She has a Ph.D in archaeology and spent 14 years on Rapa Nui doing core research into pollens and climate change.

The Great North Star Read Together is Saturday, September 20th from 11am – 1pm. Join us for 10 minutes or 2 hours of reading and fun. Join us to celebrate Minnesota libraries! Minnesotans are invited to gather at libraries across the state to show support for all libraries and the vital role they play in our communities.

Elementary fun is only going to be the 4th Wednesday of each month, so join us from 3 – 4 pm on Wednesday, September 24th playing with Nintendo Labo. Elementary students will build and create projects that can be used with the Nintendo Switch.

Are there other activities you like to do that you don’t have either a place to do them or a group to do them with? The library would like to hear from you with your ideas of what you’d like to see available in our space. Come talk to us about gaming, crafting, or other activity and we’ll see if we can’t work out a time and place to do it, whatever you like to do.

The next reading challenge is to read a book with a ‘direction in the title.’ A reminder to interpret these challenges however you want, read a book that has “Go Outside” in the title if you want. But to help you find something interesting to read, here are a handful of options. North and South by John Jakes, a classic western, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, North Woods by Daniel Mason, South of Broad by Pat Conroy or West with the Night by Beryl Markham. Try Left on 10th by Delia Ephron, a memoir, or I’ll Be Right Here by Amy Bloom, historical fiction spanning decades before WWI. Another historical fiction option would be The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry. Two additional options include The Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds available as either a novel or a graphic tale and The Way Up is Death by Dan Hanks, a harrowing survival tale.

Check out the Library of Things which has some new items including learn to knit, crochet, embroider, calligraph or simple woodworking kits. We have also added a pass similar to the State Park Passes that you can use to attend an FHS Bronco sporting event. The passes are for an adult to attend any single regular season Bronco event at no charge. If you have family from out of town and want to attend a child’s event, grab a pass to help with the costs. Or do you want to attend an event to watch your child and can’t afford to, borrow a pass to allow you to cheer your child on.
