This year, summer reading will look a bit different, but ReadSquared will stay the same. (Click here to go to that site, or you can download the app from your app store.) As you log your hours of reading, you will earn free books no matter what your age. Each book review will earn an entry into a monthly prize drawing for a bag of goodies (one adult, one teen, and one kid bag per month). Create your own profile on the ReadSquared website and start reviewing books beginning June 1, or call us for more information. Summer reading is for all ages, babies on up!
For babies: Create a profile on ReadSquared and start reading to your infant. You can log hours for free board books, and it is a great way to develop their vocabulary. Please feel free to join us for our online Storytime on Facebook (10:30 am Thursdays).
For preschoolers: Create a profile on ReadSquared and start reading to your preschooler. You can log hours for free books. We also have two weekly posts on our blog tailored to this age group.
Each Thursday at 10:30 am, we will do Storytime live on Facebook. After storytime is over, we will have a post on our blog that shows how to make that week’s craft and a kit of supplies available at the library. Stop in or call to arrange a pick up. (Yes, we do have bean bags for your child so they can enjoy the beanbag song if they would like.)
Fridays are all about Family Fun here at the library. We have a summer’s worth of exploratory play ideas for your little ones. Do them at home as a family or meet up with a small group of friends. Each Friday at 10:30 am, a new idea for fun will post to our blog on this site. Stop in to pick up your supplies or call to arrange a pick up.
For school age children: Create a profile on ReadSquared and start reading! Kids, you can read your own books, but if someone reads to you that counts as well. Feel free to join us for Storytime on Facebook, Thursday mornings at 10:30 am. We’ll be making a craft after Storytime is over, so be sure to let us know if you need the supplies. Instructions will post on our blog each week.
Wednesdays at 10:30 am, during the summer, we will post a new Libratory activity online for your family to dig deeper into the world around us. Each week we will provide a bag of supplies for you to use in building, making, cooking, tasting and otherwise exploring that week’s idea. Stop by the Junior Room or call to arrange a time to pick up your bag.
An added piece of fun for your kids is a “DIG DEEPER: Read, Investigate, Discover” bookmark design project. Arrowhead Library System is running a contest for kids of all ages. Entries must be postmarked on or before August 28, 2020. Prizes will be awarded for the five most creative designs. Get your form at the library or print it here.
ALS is also offering a Dig Deeper Summer Activity Postcard Program this year. Kids who sign up will receive a series of five unique activity postcards via mail every 2-3 weeks, encouraging them to dig deeper and experience new things during the summer months. All children in a household may sign up to participate as we know it’s always fun for kids to get mail! Program is geared towards kids ages birth-grade 5 and their family members. Here’s a sign-up link to share: https://bit.ly/3gpC31z
For teens: Create a profile on ReadSquared and start reading! You can read your own books, and listening to audio books counts, too. We have a monthly craft project for you called Bag It! Come to the library and pick up a bag of supplies. You can also log hours for free books and create book reviews for entries into the monthly drawing for a prize bag. On July 23rd, we will have an after hours virtual mystery night. Look for more details closer to the time.
For adults: Create a profile on ReadSquared and start reading! You can read your own books, and listening to audio books counts, too. The monthly craft kit for adults is called You Too, Can Do. Come to the library and pick up a bag of supplies. You can also log hours for free books and create book reviews for entries into the monthly drawing for a prize bag.
Each month, there is also a new Pop Up craft table located in the area outside the library. Ask at the desk for supplies.
Things are different this year, but we’re hoping they can still be fun and amazing. We hope to see or hear from you soon!
