Library Column for December 26, 2018

@ Your Library

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is enjoying time with friends and family in this last week of 2018. Stop by the library for a book, Wii game or movie to share together.  And if you got a new device for Christmas make sure and load the library apps that enable you to read and listen to books for free.  See my December 5th column for more details or stop by the library and ask for assistance, no promises though.  We can usually figure out how to help someone, but not always.

As the year comes to a close and we spend time reflecting on the past year and its ups and downs (and don’t they all have ups and downs), books are often on my list of highlights. Books help us learn, build empathy and sometimes just escape from the downs, the overwhelming or even chaotic. I had a slower reading year but more deliberate and less random.  I tackled Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante both books written in another language and translated to English. I read some heavy thinking titles about race, politics and religion this year as well.  I think my 2019 reading will focus on sleeper titles that I can recommend when the bestsellers are checked out. Whatever books tickle your fancy I hope it was a great reading year and that 2019 will be even better.  The library wants to help you read what you want to read, so let us know how we can help you learn and grow in 2019 with incredible books for readers of any level or any interests.

Come create a metal stamped bracelet, help with a jigsaw puzzle, play a game, or create a New Year’s noisemaker at the library this week.  The library always has a variety of activities available at the library for you and your family to complete. And if you have young kids at home this holiday season borrow one of our kits or games to use at home. Build a marble run, explore circuitry or play a game together.  We have Dixit, Pit, The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game, Sorry, Settlers of Catan and lots more that can be borrowed for a week at a time.

Stay tuned for some great programs at the library in 2019. We are excited to be offering wonderful opportunities for fun, learning new things and discovering more of the wonders of this amazing planet. If you haven’t I encourage you to like our page on Facebook for the latest information and reminders about upcoming programs. Let us know if you have a program you’d like to see or if you have a skill you’d like to share with the community.

The library will close at 5pm on December 31, be closed on Tuesday, January 1 and re-open at 10am on Wednesday, January 2.  Regular library hours are Monday – Wednesday 10am – 8pm, Thursday – Friday 10am – 6pm and Saturday 10am – 3pm.
