Library Column for June 14, 2017

@ Your Library

Author, William Durbin will be at your local public library on Tuesday, June 20th at 10:30 am! Come hear him talk about his research and writing process as he explores stories set in Northern Minnesota. The Novels of the Arrowhead Region Program will feature William Durbin and how he has used primary source material to write novels about the history of Northeastern Minnesota, including popular subjects such as lumberjacks, iron miners, immigrants, and homesteaders. During his presentation, Mr. Durbin will share how he researches and writes his novels and will show slides of archival photographs that help bring history to life. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The Friends of the Library monthly book sale will be Monday, June 19 from 1 – 3 pm. All sales are by donation with proceeds benefiting the Friends support of library programming. Come find a great beach read, or new (to you) books to read while at the shack.

Wednesday, June 21 at 2:00 pm the library will host a teen painting party for teens. Come paint under the tutelage of Bob Ross (on video). All supplies provided, just bring your sense of humor and a desire for a peaceful hour of happy trees.

Stories and more continues on Thursday mornings at 10:30 am. Each week a different concept is explored through books, games, activities, crafts, science and more. For anyone under age 10 and their caregiver.

We have several new graphic novel, or comic series at the library. Come take a look at Sweetness and Lighting by Gido Amagakure, about a young math teacher whose wife has died and he has to raise his daughter alone. Hockey Saint and the sequel Hockey Karma by Howard Shapiro about the world’s best hockey player Jeremiah Johnson and his unlikely friendship with an average college sophomore. Marissa Meyer, author of the well-loved Lunar Chronicles has extended that world in Wires and Nerve about Iko the android with a heart of (mechanized) gold.

Kids might enjoy Catstronauts: Mission Moon and Race to Mars by Drew Brockington. A futuristic story with aliens is One Trick Pony by Nathan Hale. Take your sports to the next level with Fantasy Sports by Sam Bosma and play basketball with a god.

We love having people come to library programs and love sharing our interests and ideas with you. But most important to us is having each and every member of this community read and/or listen to books. Books can expand our horizons, help us be empathetic, help us learn new skills and discover new interests. Again, we would love to have you come to the library and borrow a book or two, but we don’t even care (too much) if you don’t want to use the library. We just want you to read, share reading with the children in your life and have everyone spend a few minutes each and every day reading.
