Library Column for May 24, 2017

@ Your Library

The month of May is rapidly reaching its end. The library continues to prepare for summer reading and summer programming. We are excited about all our upcoming programs. Check back next week for June programs or if you have children in school ask them about the summer reading program brochure which they should have brought home last week. Stop by the library beginning June 1, the last day of school for youth summer reading bags with reading logs and more. If you don’t make it to the library then, kids can begin keeping track of their daily readings by marking the summer reading brochure each day they listen to someone read to them or they read themselves at least twenty minutes. They will earn a free book each time they record twenty days of at least twenty minutes of reading.

The Gargoyle Hunters by first time novelist John Freeman Gill is an amazing story. The novel takes the basic story of a 4-ton cast iron building façade stolen in Manhattan in 1974 and creates an entire story. I looked up the original story that appeared on the front page of the New York Times on June 26, 1974 and was amazed that thieves were able to cart away pieces of the building before anyone noticed.

Edgar Allan Poe was a fascinating person and many in the years since his death and explored his life and created mysteries and more. Karen Lee Street continues this trend with Edgar Allan Poe and the London Monster. The London Monster terrorized ladies of London in 1788-90, slicing the derrieres of over fifty women, often targeting attractive, well-dressed women. This is the first of what could be a series with Poe and his ‘ur-detective’ C. Auguste Dupin.

While I seem to be sharing dark, gritty thrillers today let’s continue with I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. Jenna Gray moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast after a hit-and-run takes the life of her young son. At the same time police try to get to the bottom of the twist-filled case, chasing one hopeless lead after another.

The Shimmering Road by Hester Young is a ghost story set in the Sonoran Desert, filled with murder, family and a supernatural ability to connect future and past through dreams and visions.

Come visit us and see our new activity tables on the main floor of the library. We have a puzzle table, a coloring table and a game table. We currently have a presidential puzzle out, chess and checkers available and a variety of coloring sheets. Spend some time at your local library reading, playing and exploring. Check back often as we plan on rotating the games available and putting out a new puzzle as the current puzzle is finished.

The library has switched to our summer schedule. The library is open Monday – Wednesday 10 am – 8 pm, and Thursday and Friday 10 am – 6 pm. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday.
